South Andaman
Ross Island, officially renamed as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island, is one of the most historically significant destinations in the Andaman Islands. Located just a short boat ride away from Port Blair, the island once served as the administrative headquarters of the British colonial government in the Andaman region.
During British rule, Ross Island was known as the "Paris of the East" because of its well-planned infrastructure, colonial buildings, churches, hospitals, and administrative offices. However, after an earthquake in 1941 and the Japanese occupation during World War II, most of the structures were abandoned and gradually taken over by nature.
Today the island is famous for its ruins covered with tree roots and vegetation, creating a unique historical and natural atmosphere. Visitors can explore old colonial buildings, walk through scenic pathways, and observe wildlife such as deer and peacocks roaming freely across the island.
Ross Island offers stunning views of the sea and nearby islands, making it a popular destination for photography and sightseeing. The peaceful surroundings and historical significance make it a must-visit location for anyone traveling to the Andaman Islands.
